Congratulations Colton Malcolm
The Black Belt testing begins with the conditioning we do to start every class with pushups, crunches, and stretches.
Then we begin the Black Belt testing with all the techniques shown and explained by Colton on the equipment. Focus mitts for hand techniques, coach bags for sweeping and take down techniques, air shields for kicking techniques. Not everything is pictured.
The Black Belt testing then moves to self defense techniques. Not everything is pictured
Colton then demonstrates and explains self defense against sticks, guns, and knives.
Colton then demonstrates and explains all the matt work which includes how to fall properly, rolling out forward and backwards, slap outs, and defense when there is someone on top of you in many different ways. Not all is pictured
Colton now performs 14 kata and these are listed on our Karate/Kobudo Syllabus page
The Shinai, a Kendo training tool, tests the student’s mental strength. They learn not to fear pain

Colton then spars all the students on the floor, beginning with the lowest rank and working up to the highest rank. The goal is to see the spirit of “Never give up” demonstrated. These are just a few of the pictures.
We now award Shodan Colton with his Black Belt.
Colton Malcom walked into the dojo as a four year old boy in July 2013. After growing up in Karate he is now a strong and focused sixteen year old and the latest certified Black Belt at Belen Soju Ryu Karate. So far, Colton is the 80th Black Belt at Belen Goju Ryu to achieve this goal. Colton is the son of John and Jean Malcom of Los Lunas. He is home schooled andwill be a Junior High School level next year. Colton choses to train in Karate “to learn self defense and discipline” and he certainly has. His Sensei, Richard and Cindy Long, are extremely proud of his achievement.
