Shodan Antoinette Austin has shown how a working nurse, wife and mother of two kids finds time to train in karate and earn the rank of Black Belt. The key to her accomplishment is that she never gave up. Antoinette started training over ten years ago because she wanted to learn self defense. She has certainly done that now and she continues to train to improve her kata and knowledge of technique. She is a great example of what can be achieved if you want it!

Belen Goju Ryu Karate is also thankful for both, Shodan Antoinette and her husband, John’s, service to our country. They are both Veterans of the U.S. Army.

Antoinette tested for her Black Belt on May 11, 2018 and was certified as Shodan on November 8, 2018.

The Black Belt test consists of demonstrating all technique and to also be able to teach the techniques correctly. This part of the test is with the equipment demonstrating all hand techniques, kicking techniques, knee and elbow techniques and sweeping techniques.

There is much knowledge being tested i the 3 1/2 hours it take to complete this test. Knowledge on empty hand defense, ground defense, and weapons defense.

All kata are performed. Five Taikyoko, three Gekisai,Saifa, Seinchin, Shisochin, Sanseiru

Then comes the sparring with all the students from the lower ranks all the way up to Sensei Richard. Sensei Richard opens up to feel and see the fighting spirit of the student.

Antoinette is awarded her Black Belt and well deserved!

Great support from the family all these years. Great pictures of the test by student and friend, Missy.
